The Oscars Predictions a lá Patch

Apparently to be a Patch member it is a prerequisite to A.) have an interest in fashion and B.) be a movie buff. Talk about employee brand culture at it’s finest! Under the first category, 4 out of 5 of us currently carry trendy colours of purple, green, pink or peacock in our hair with our 5th member (who literally just got married this weekend) sporting au Natural for now. With Sunday night leading up to the big Academy Awards ceremony, we thought we’d pull out some popcorn, print Oscar ballots and chatter Denzel, Viola, Emma, Ryan, Casey, Meryl, Ryan – you get it, all fun things Oscar.

All of us grew up with Friday family movie nights – it was a way to get lost in fantasy from costume and set designs, to laugh out loud humour, to blockbuster soundtracks, to animated features that would unknowingly inspire the name of some of our children (Flynn Ryder anyone?). And there’s quite the stretch of Oscar nominated favs among us – West Side Story to American Beauty to Out of Africa. This year, most of us saw at least 3 of the 9 nominated movies on the silver screen and all of us saw the one movie that should have rounded out the usual 10 nominees – Deadpool. Ryan Reynolds call us if you need us to picket at the Oscars! Ryan Gosling call us anyways – we’re all Canadian fans!

This year we look forward to a few interesting stats* for the Oscars:

  • New Roasts? Jimmy Kimmel takes the stage as host for the first time
  • New Faces – Zero of this year’s acting nominees were nominated in 2016
  • New Media – Amazon is the first streaming company to score a Best Pic nom
  • New Heights – The average cost of a 30 second commercial is 2.1M during Oscars
  • New Era – The Best Actor & Actress nominees share a combined 31 previous nominations between then, 19 of those belonging to just Meryl Streep!

While we sadly can’t get dressed up to attend the Oscars or the Vanity Fair afterparty (DYK it’s $119,800 USD per couple to get an invite?! Ha!), we are planning to watch on Sunday to see which of us got the most predications correct. Did I mention – a third prerequisite at Patch is C.) be competitive.

With the exception of Lauren – who is on her honeymoon – our Oscar predictions are…

Whoever the winners, however the night turns out – one thing is for sure. Movies have always been part of our individual lives and play a big part in our company culture. Did you know we’ve actually worked on design projects while playing movies on a separate computer in the office? It’s a source of creativity! Tune in on Monday when we honour the Patch member with the most accurate predictions and shell out our own little Oscar. Until then – we’ll be back! (Terminator voice!)
